Pullman Junction: Segment B Project – Design Update

create pullman junction

SCOPE OF WORK

Segment A of this project will realign track and upgrade signals at the north end of Norfolk Southern’s Calumet Yard where NS track connects to the Belt Railway of Chicago. The project also includes construction of a second Norfolk Southern track through the junction, replacement of hand thrown yard switches with power-operated switches, and installation of a sound wall.

Segment B of the project will upgrade an existing Belt Railway of Chicago yard track to a main line track from Rock Island Junction to Pullman Junction (where the Belt Railway of Chicago and Norfolk Southern connect near Stony Island and 95th Street). Additionally, signal upgrades to Centralized Traffic Control (CTC remotely directs the movements of trains) will be made
throughout the entire project.

Location
From Rock Island Junction,
where the Belt Railway of
Chicago (BRC) and Norfolk
Southern (NS) cross near
Commercial Avenue and
95th Street, to west of Pullman
Junction near Stony Island
Avenue and 95th Street
Chicago, IL

BENEFITS

Trains traveling east on the Belt Railway of Chicago toward the Norfolk Southern Chicago Subdivision often must wait for cross traffic to clear, creating main line congestion. Trains traveling westward off the Norfolk Southern Chicago Subdivision are also delayed due to congestion on the Belt Railway of Chicago. The additional main line track will provide additional capacity for through movements around the trains waiting to access the Norfolk Southern Chicago Subdivision. Additional track and signal upgrades at Pullman Junction will allow greater flexibility and access to four existing  main line tracks west of Pullman Junction.
