A variety of support services are available citywide to address the diverse needs and interests of older adults, from those who are active and healthy, to those residing in long-term care facilities and seniors who are fragile and may be confined to home.

Assisted Living Information

Assisted Living is private pay alternative for people needing assistance with activities of daily living but wishing to live as independently as possible. Residents are not able to live by themselves but do not require constant care either.

Caregiving Assistance

The Chicago Department of Senior Services offers a variety of programs and services for families who are caring for their older loved ones. We know that your goal as an informal caregiver is to help your loved one maintain as much control over their own lives as possible under the circumstances. Our goal is to help you do that.

Congregate Dining Program

The Golden Diners Program offers older adults (60 years of age and older) and their spouses of any age, an opportunity to have a healthy, nutritious meal each day while enjoying the company of friends at approximately 50 community sites throughout the City of Chicago.

Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker and Illinois Cares RX

The Illinois Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker program provides grants to senior citizens and persons with disabilities to help them reduce the impact of taxes and prescription medications on their lives.

Home Delivered Meals

The City of Chicago’s Home Delivered Meal (HDM) Program provides nutritious meals to eligible Chicago residents, 60 years of age and older, who are frail and/ or homebound because of illness, incapacitating disability, or are otherwise isolated.

Insurance Counseling for Seniors

Volunteer counselors with the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) offer free, one-on-one insurance counseling at our Regional Senior Centers.

Legal Assistance

Professional attorneys are available to assist caregivers with various legal issues such as; Power of Attorney, Living Wills, Guardianship and other legal issues that caregivers are often faced with when assisting their older loved ones.

Senior Centers are a dedicated facility or a community hub designed to serve the needs and interests of older adults, typically those aged 60 and above.

Senior Services Overview

Senior Services is committed to serving older individuals with limited financial resources, those facing social isolation, and minority persons, in particular those with limited English proficiency.

Senior Well Being Check

This service request is used to identify seniors whose health, safety or general well being are in question. The City will send a  team of Human Services specialists to make a  assessment of the client's needs.

Small Accessible Repairs for Seniors

The waiting list for the SARFS Program is closed as of December 21, 2022. Individual SARFS Delegate Agencies do not maintain their own waiting list for SARFS; however, they may work on other programs. DOH may reopen the waiting list for 2024.
