Alderman Greg Mitchell assumed office in May 2015 and wasted no time in making significant strides toward his vision of "Building a Better 7th." In less than three years, he accomplished a series of major projects and key components of his campaign platform, laying the foundation for the realization of his goals.

One of Alderman Mitchell's primary achievements was re-establishing the crucial link between the 7th Ward and City Hall. This effort resulted in substantial infrastructure improvements totaling over $60,000,000 in his community. Aptly nicknamed Greg by his constituents, he has literally paved the way for economic prosperity in the 7th Ward. Leveraging partnerships with various city departments, Mitchell enhanced his residents' quality of life. His collaboration with the Office of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection led to the closure of several problematic businesses fostering criminal activities. Additionally, his direct involvement with the Mayor’s Office brought the Retail Thrive Zone program to the commercial corridor on 79th St., an initiative he co-sponsored. This program injects much-needed funds into businesses, revitalizing abandoned storefronts and breathing new life into 79th St.

Moreover, Alderman Mitchell introduced an unprecedented level of customer service to the 7th Ward through the establishment of the 7th Ward Service Center. This center handles hundreds of requests from 7th Ward residents daily, ensuring prompt responses to needs such as tree trimmings, snow removal, street light repairs, and vacant lot cleanups. During his first term, Alderman Mitchell impressively resolved over 90% of service requests. He also revolutionized information dissemination to residents, implementing a modern communication strategy integrating email, social media, direct outreach, and a well-maintained website. This approach ensures over 14,000 plus 7th Ward residents receive weekly updates on city services, job opportunities, and community developments.

Lastly, Alderman Greg Mitchell has demonstrated unwavering commitment to his community by upholding his promise to be a responsible and honorable representative. He consistently maintains one of the highest attendance rates in City Council and committee meetings. Furthermore, he remains accessible to residents, dedicating his time to weekly constituent nights, quarterly town halls, and active participation in community organizations.

Alderman Greg Mitchell's remarkable achievements within this short timeframe can be attributed to his exceptional character and his 20 years of corporate business experience. He skillfully leverages his expertise from managing multi-million dollar technology and finance projects for the Chicago Board of Trade, exemplifying his dedication to the 7th Ward community.

Alderman Greg Mitchell embarked on his career journey in 1993 at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, now known as the CME Group, in the capacity of an Auditor. In this role, he conducted comprehensive compliance and financial statement audits of clearing firms and broker dealers. His skills and expertise in information technology soon became evident, leading to a pivotal transition in 1995 when Greg assumed the role of IT Systems Support Engineer within the CME's burgeoning IT department. His profound understanding of the IT infrastructure, coupled with a keen grasp of the organization's overarching business objectives, prompted management to entrust him with the leadership of critical IT projects and initiatives. Embracing this new challenge, Greg stepped into the role of IT Project Manager, where he effectively oversaw several multimillion-dollar projects, impacting both domestic and international offices, including locations in New York, Ireland, London, and Asia.

Over a distinguished career spanning nearly 15 years, Alderman Greg Mitchell's contributions at the CME Group were instrumental in his progression to positions of increasing responsibility. His journey within the organization included roles as a Senior Network Engineer, Manager of Desktop Support and Engineering, and, ultimately, Director of IT Operations and Asset Management. This remarkable career trajectory exemplifies his dedication and leadership within the CME Group.

In 1999, Alderman Greg Mitchell temporarily left his position at the CME, driven by a lifelong aspiration to become a trader. While at the CME, he observed the bustling activity on the trading floor, and his competitive drive led him to that world. Beyond merely working for others, Alderman Mitchell was determined to secure his own place on the trading floor, a rare achievement for African Americans. In 2000, he realized this dream by establishing GRG Trading, where he actively traded Eurodollar futures contracts for his personal account.

Alderman Mitchell places a high value on education, and this commitment to learning has been evident throughout his academic journey, beginning at Luella Elementary School. His exceptional academic prowess opened doors to Kenwood Academy High School, where he thrived both as a scholar and a student-athlete. His dedication to education continued at Grambling State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting with minors in Finance and Computer Information Systems. Alderman Mitchell's unwavering pursuit of academic excellence is exemplified by his consistent presence on the Dean's List for four consecutive years. During this time, he had the remarkable opportunity to embark on a transformative six-month internship with IBM in Tarrytown, NY, which ignited his passion for business and technology.

While at Grambling, Mitchell was not just a student but an engaged member of the campus community. He actively participated in Student Government and earned the trust and respect of his peers, leading to his election as Senior Class President and Student Government Association Vice President. Alderman Mitchell's leadership skills also found expression within the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated during his time at Grambling. Within the fraternity, he assumed key roles, initially serving as the Keeper of Finance for his chapter and later stepping into the position of President.

Alderman Greg Mitchell has proudly called the 7th Ward home for more than five decades. Raised in the close-knit neighborhood of Jeffery Manor in Southeast Chicago, he hails from a hardworking, blue-collar family and is the third of four siblings. As the sole son in the family, Mitchell inherited his strong work ethic and unwavering discipline from his parents. His father's service in the US Marine Corps and subsequent career at the US Postal Service, coupled with his mother's dedicated role as a part-time working housewife, instilled in him the values of dedication and resilience.

From a young age, Alderman Mitchell recognized the importance of hard work and community involvement. Whether it was shoveling snow, tending to lawns, or assisting elderly residents with their groceries, he learned that community strength arises from the collective efforts directed toward a common goal. This early understanding profoundly influenced his love and profound respect for his neighborhood.

As his professional career flourished, Alderman Mitchell turned his focus toward giving back to the very community that had nurtured his growth and success: the 7th Ward. His volunteer roles as a little league and high school baseball coach and mentor reinforced the concept of "paying it forward." Observing unaddressed challenges that impacted the ward's quality of life, primarily stemming from a lack of vision, leadership, and effective strategies to tackle these issues, Mitchell took action. In 2011, he mobilized a grassroots movement and entered the race for 7th Ward Alderman, finishing third in a competitive contest, trailing only the incumbent and a former Alderman. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of his journey as a dedicated advocate for the 7th Ward community.
