How to Apply To Chicago Housing Authority Placement
New Applications
Who can apply? Anyone interested in Public Housing and Project Based Voucher program can apply.
Where to apply? All new applications can be completed online at applyonline.thecha.org
How to apply? Follow the on-screen instructions.
You will need your:
- Social Security Number,
Alien Registration Number, or
Temporary ID Number (will be assigned) - Date of Birth
- Email Address
You can select the property or property group of your choice.
When to apply? You can apply at any time. Applications are always open.
What happens next? You will receive an email confirmation when you have successfully completed your application.

HOW DOES CHA SELECT APPLICANTS ONCE A UNIT BECOMES AVAILABLE?
CHA selects names from the waitlist based on:
- Application date (for the unit size available)
- Eligible preferences (if any) - for example homelessness.
Utility Bill Relief: The City of Chicago offers utility relief programs to assist residents facing disconnection from water, gas, and/or electric services.
- Utility Bill Relief (UBR) and LIHWAP: Provides low-income residents with reduced rates on water, sewer, and water-sewer tax.
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Assists eligible households with heating and cooling energy costs.
